2019 marked the decade that saw the greatest truck occupant loss of life in road crashes and thankfully, that trend did not continue into 2020. This is a massive achievement considering COVID-19 saw the transport industry becoming one of the most essential services in the world. With increased transport operations on our roads, three key trends emerged:
Large loss crashes decreased in 2020
Likely as a result of COVID-19, the overall frequency of large loss (greater than $50k) crashes involving heavy vehicles declined in 2020.
Fatigue continued to decline
Fatigue crashes continued their long-term decline with lowest ever proportion of large losses caused by fatigue.
Inappropriate speed and driver error is still a concern
Inappropriate speed and driver error crashes continue to a serious concern with 54.5% of all large loss crashes in 2020 caused by these two factors.
